A message from Irwin Nash, M.D., FCAP
Chairman, Department of Pathology
Welcome to pathology, the study and diagnosis of disease through examin
ation of organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and whole bodies (autopsies). The Pathology Department of the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven consists of both an Anatomic and Clinical Laboratory section. The Anatomic Section is staffed by four full-time and two part-time pathologists, three pathology assistants, five histotechnologists, and technical support staff. All pathologists are knowledgable and experienced in general pathology as well as subspecialty expertise.
Our department includes an active immunohistochemistry laboratory -- an important asset in evaluating tumors. We also have performed digital image analysis which allows for technically advanced breast cancer evaluation.
The clinical laboratory is staffed by experienced and dedicated technicians conducting sophisticated testing in general chemistry, hematology, blood banking and microbiology. The laboratory performs almost two million tests a year and functions twenty four hours, seven days a week. Staff and administration are patient-oriented and are important active participants in the diagnostic and therapeutic service of the hospital.
