October 22, 2009 - Saint Raphael's breast imaging center is named a "Center of Excellence"
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has been named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, recognizing the hospital for achieving the highest standards in imaging technology.  Saint Raphael's is fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, required for Center of Excellence designation.   Historia completa

October 16, 2009 - Saint Raphael's oncologist named physician of the year
Andrea Silber, M.D., co-director of Saint Raphael's Women's Center for Breast Health, has been named Physician of the Year by Business New Haven newspaper. Profiled as one of 2009's "Healthcare Heroes" in the latest edition of Business New Haven, Silber will be honored at an upcoming event for her commitment to excellence in breast cancer treatment and caring for the medically underserved.  Historia completa

October 1, 2009 - Saint Raphael's opens renovated short-term surgery unit

September 28, 2009 - Saint Raphael Foundation names new executive director
Lucy Sirico of Milford has been named executive director of the Saint Raphael Foundation. In her new role, Sirico is responsible for the Foundation's fundraising efforts, which support the Saint Raphael Healthcare System. September 22, 2009 - Saint Raphael's names new president and CEO
Christopher M. O'Connor has been named president and chief executive officer of the Saint Raphael Healthcare System and Hospital of Saint Raphael. He is slated to begin Oct. 1. O'Connor previously served in various roles at the hospital earlier in his career.Historia completa 

September 14, 2009 - Classic car show to benefit Saint Raphael's Cancer Center
The Hospital of Saint Raphael will present its first annual "Cruising Against Cancer" car show to benefit the Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care. The competitive show, featuring 200 antique, exotic and muscle cars, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009 (rain date-October 11), from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Honeywell in Northford, Conn.  Historia completa

September 10, 2009 - Saint Raphael's hosts free prostate screening for local men
The Hospital of Saint Raphael invites men in the Greater New Haven area to a free prostate screening on Tuesday, Sept. 15, as part of the Project Brotherhood outreach program. September 2, 2009 - Saint Raphael's and the American Cancer Society launch benefit walk
The Hospital of Saint Raphael and the American Cancer Society have teamed up in an effort to make the 2009 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraising walk the biggest ever. August 13, 2009 - Saint Raphael physicians perform pioneering spine procedure
Physicians in the Spine Program at the Hospital of Saint Raphael have become among the first in the state to perform one of the most advanced spine surgeries in the world. The new procedure, called lateral interbody fusion, helps correct conditions like disc disease, spinal stenosis and scoliosis with less disruption to organs, bones and muscles and fewer side effects.  Full Story.

June 23, 2009 - Saint Raphael's Staff Member Named 'Healthcare Hero'
The Connecticut Hospital Association will honor Dorethea Haywood, manager of the HOPE Program at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, as a "2009 Healthcare Hero" at their annual meeting tonight (June 23).  Haywood coordinates education and counseling for local residents transitioning from welfare and unemployment to work.

June 23, 2009 - Killingworth elementary school donates books to Saint Raphael's

May 26, 2009 - Saint Raphael's physician donates to medical education fund
Alan Kliger, M.D., chairman of Saint Raphael's Department of Medicine, donated $50,000 in honorariums received while serving a two-year tenure as president of the Renal Physicians Association (RPA) - a national association of nearly 4,000 members.  The donation will support Saint Raphael's medical education programs.Historia completa

May 23, 2009 - Accredited breast center is featured on WTNH-TV spot on breast cancer
The Hospital of Saint Raphael's Women's Center for Breast Health is the first in the region to win accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.  Dr. Denise Barajas appeared on WTNH-TV Channel 8's "Good Morning Connecticut" to talk about the accomplishment.  Haga clic para ver el video.

May 15, 2009 - Philanthropist Cronin Gives $500,000 to Saint Raphael's

May 13, 2009 - Saint Raphael's Hamden cancer center to host open host on May 31
The Hospital of Saint Raphael is inviting the public to a free open house celebration on May 31 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at the new Michael J. McGivney Cancer Center Hamden Campus at 2080 Whitney Avenue. Planned events include tours of the facility, raffle drawings, screenings, lectures by medical experts and a live band. May 4, 2009 - Saint Raphael's awarded prenatal care grant
An innovative program that empowers pregnant women to take a larger role in their own prenatal care is slated to start this year at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. The Connecticut Department of Public Health and the March of Dimes have awarded grants totaling $58,000 to Saint Raphael's to fund the implementation of the Centering Pregnancy Model for Prenatal Care at the hospital.  Historia completa

The Hospital of Saint Raphael is sponsoring a free lecture in Shelton on childhood obesity to help adults recognize and address this issue. April 7, 2009 - Saint Raphael's physician named head of national surgical group
Hospital of Saint Raphael Department of Surgery Chairman W. Scott Helton, M.D., has been named president of a national group of surgeons specializing in disorders of the liver, pancreas and bile duct. Members of the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA) elected Helton to the top post at the group's annual meeting in March. March 11, 2009 - Saint Raphael's announces new smoke-free policy
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has announced it will go smoke-free this year, joining healthcare providers nationwide in making a commitment to health and wellness. Saint Raphael's new policy establishes a 100% smoke-free environment at the main hospital campus and satellite facilities. Project ElderCare, a Saint Raphael's community outreach program that brings health care to seniors in the buildings where they live, is marking five years in West Haven's Surfside Building. The Hospital of Saint Raphael has appointed Anne R. Moore, B.S.N., M.S.N., M.S., to the position of director of the hospital's Spine Program. February 1, 2009 - Saint Raphael's flu specialist offers tips on flu prevention
Diane Dumigan, Saint Raphael's flu specialist and infection preventionist, appeared on WTNH-Channel 8's "Good Morning Connecticut" to remind people it's never too late to get a flu shot.  Even though flu season is well underway, vaccination, thorough hand washing, and using alcohol-based hand rubs are good preventative methods to help people avoid the disease. January 26, 2009 - Saint Raphael's enlists new laser system in cancer fight
New state-of-the-art laser technology is helping Saint Raphael's oncologists better target and destroy cancerous tumors. The lasers, used in tandem with PET-CT scanners, allow for more precise and effective radiation therapy planning - a key step in cancer treatment.  Historia completa

January 13, 2009 - Saint Raphael's appoints new chairman of psychiatry
The Hospital of Saint Raphael has appointed Marshal Mandelkern, M.D., to the position of chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, effective February 9, 2009.  As chairman of the Psychiatry Department, Dr. Mandelkern will oversee Saint Raphael's inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services for adults and children, along with substance abuse services.  A New Haven resident for more than 30 years, Dr. Mandelkern joined the Saint Raphael's medical staff in 1995, serving since 1998 as the medical director of inpatient and day hospital services and the adult outpatient psychiatric service. He earned both an M.D. and Ph.D. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University.
